Why Take a Private Yoga Class? Benefits, Who It's For and What to Expect

Why take a private yoga class? The real benefits of one-on-one yoga, who it helps most, what a first session looks like, and home vs studio sessions.

People ask me all the time why they should take a private yoga class when there is a perfectly good group class on the schedule. It’s a fair question. Group classes are wonderful, and I will always love a full room. But a private session does something a group class can’t. It is built around one person: your body, your history, your goals, and whatever kind of day you’re having.

If you’ve been curious about one-on-one yoga, here is what I’d want a friend to know.

The benefits of private yoga

The biggest benefit is attention. In a group class, a teacher is watching twenty bodies at once. In a private session, all of that attention is on you. Your teacher can see how you actually move, notice what your breath does when a pose gets hard, and change the plan in the moment.

That matters because nobody’s body is the textbook version. You might have a shoulder that doesn’t like weight, hips that feel tight after a long commute, or a low back that needs extra care. A private teacher can build a practice around those things instead of asking you to work around them.

Private sessions also move at your pace. If you want to spend a whole hour learning how to breathe properly and get comfortable in a few basic poses, you can. If you’ve practiced for years and want to refine a handstand or finally understand your alignment in a twist, you can do that too.

And there is the simple benefit of consistency. When someone is expecting you on Tuesday morning, you show up.

Who private yoga is good for

Honestly, almost anyone. But these are the people I see get the most out of it:

  • Complete beginners who feel nervous walking into a room of strangers and want to learn the foundations first.
  • Experienced students who want to refine their practice or work toward something specific.
  • People who want support for stress, sleep or a busy nervous system, through slower movement, breathwork (pranayama) and meditation.
  • Anyone wanting more flexibility and easier movement as the years go by.
  • Pregnant and postpartum clients, with a practice that changes as their body does.
  • Families, couples and friends who want to share a session.
  • Seniors looking for gentle mobility, in their own space.

Our private offerings include beginner foundations, advanced practice refinement, stress and nervous system support, flexibility and mobility, meditation and breathwork, and spiritual development. You can also book semi-private or small group sessions if you’d like to practice with a few people you know.

What a first private yoga session looks like

People are sometimes nervous about the first session because they don’t know what’s expected. The answer is: nothing, really. You just come as you are.

Every private plan with us starts with a conversation. We want to know what you’re hoping for. More strength? Easier movement? Better sleep? Support through a pregnancy? A calmer mind? Or maybe just a gentle first introduction to yoga. We also want to know about any injuries or health concerns, so the practice is safe for you.

From there, your teacher will guide you through movement and breath that fit what you shared. Expect lots of check-ins. How does that feel? Would a block help? Do you want to stay here a little longer? You’re allowed to say no to anything, and you’re allowed to ask questions the whole time.

Most people leave the first session with a sense of what their body needs and a few simple things they can practice on their own. Then we adjust as you progress.

Private yoga at home vs in the studio

This is one of my favorite parts of private work: you get to choose where it happens.

At home. In-home sessions are the most flexible. There’s no drive, no parking, no rushing. Your teacher comes to your living room, your back deck or your guest room. We bring the practice to you anywhere in Nassau County and across Long Island, including the North Shore, the South Shore and the Hamptons. In-home and on-location sessions include a travel fee, which we quote when you inquire.

In the studio. You can also meet your teacher at our studio at 7 North Village Avenue in Rockville Centre. Some people love leaving the house and stepping into a calm, quiet room that’s set up for practice. Studio sessions don’t carry a travel fee.

Online. Virtual private sessions work well for travel weeks or if you live farther away.

Outdoors or away. We also teach on beaches (Long Beach and the Hamptons), at hotels and at vacation properties.

Many people mix and match: a home session one week, a studio session the next, a virtual check-in while they’re away. Same teacher, same plan. One note: we don’t currently offer in-person sessions in New York City.

How to know if it’s right for you

If you’ve been thinking, “I’d try yoga, but I’m not sure I’d keep up,” private yoga might be your door in. The same is true if you’ve practiced for years and feel stuck, or if your life right now (a new baby, an injury, a hard season) needs something gentler and more personal than a group class.

Private sessions and group classes also work beautifully together. Plenty of our students take a few private sessions to build confidence and then join us for Newbies or Gentle Flow. Our New Student Special even has an optional private session add-on for exactly that reason.

How to book a private yoga session on Long Island

It’s simple. Send us an inquiry through our private yoga page or call (516) 619-6421. Tell us your town, who will be practicing and what you’d like support with. We’ll get back to you within one to two business days to talk through format, setting and scheduling, and we’ll match you with the right teacher. Pricing depends on the format, location, group size and how often you’d like to meet, so we’ll put it together with you.

If you live elsewhere in the county, you can also see the towns we travel to on our Nassau County private yoga page.

I’d love to help you find a practice that feels like yours.
