Walking into your first yoga class can feel like walking into a party where you don’t know anyone. What do I wear? Where do I put my shoes? What if I can’t touch my toes? What if everyone stares?
I promise, nobody is staring. Everyone in that room had a first class too. Here’s what to expect in your first yoga class, so you can walk in feeling a little more at home.
Choose a beginner-friendly class
Not every class is a first-class class. Look for something labeled beginner, gentle or foundations.
At our studio, we built a class just for this. Newbies is for people who have never done yoga before. We talk about what yoga is and where it comes from, explain the yogic breath, and walk through the basic poses one by one, with lots of attention on alignment and preventing injury. It’s 60 minutes, and by the end you’ll feel ready to take any class on our schedule. Some people take it once. Some stay for months. Both are right.
Revolution Gentle Flow is another good first choice. It’s slower and very welcoming.
You can read about every class, and how spicy each one is, on our class types page.
What to wear to your first yoga class
Wear something comfortable that you can move and bend in, and that won’t slide around when you fold forward. Leggings or soft pants and a fitted top work well. Layers are nice, because you may warm up during class and cool down during rest at the end.
You don’t need fancy yoga clothes. You don’t need a particular brand or look. Truly, wear what makes you feel at ease.
We practice barefoot, so no special shoes. You’ll leave yours outside the practice room.
What to bring
- A mat, if you have one. If you don’t, you can rent one of ours for $3 (free for members).
- Water.
- Yourself, just as you are. No flexibility required. Curiosity helps.
You don’t need to bring props. Blocks, straps, blankets and bolsters are there for you at no charge. Just wipe down anything you use afterward with the studio supplies.
One small thing: please skip strong perfume or cologne. Some people in class are sensitive to scents, and you’ll be breathing deeply together.
Arrive early
For your first class, plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. That gives you time to check in, find the bathroom, set up your mat and settle. Before you come, sign our studio waiver online. It takes about two minutes.
We ask everyone to pre-register for classes. After you book, you’ll get confirmation and instructions by email.
If you’re running late, know that there’s a five-minute late entry window. After that, the doors close so class isn’t disrupted. If you miss it, don’t worry. Just catch the next one.
Parking in Rockville Centre is easy: there’s street parking plus several municipal lots within a block of the studio at 7 North Village Avenue.
Tell the teacher you’re new
This is the best tip I can give you. When you arrive, find the teacher and say, “Hi, it’s my first class.” Mention any injuries, health conditions or pregnancy too. Your teacher will keep an eye out, offer options and make sure you feel welcome.
Yoga class etiquette (the short version)
Studio etiquette is simple and mostly about kindness.
- Silence your phone or leave it outside the room. If you truly need it for an emergency, leave it with the front desk to monitor for you.
- Take off your shoes before going into the studio.
- Keep chatter soft in the practice room, since some people arrive early to rest.
- Follow the teacher’s guidance, and honor your own body’s limits.
- Clean any props or rental mats you used.
That’s really it.
Modifications are always offered
Here’s something people don’t always know: a good yoga class is full of options. Your teacher will often offer a few versions of a pose. Some use blocks or a strap. Some are gentler. Some add a challenge. You pick what works for your body today.
At Revolution, we want you to move like you. Rest when you need to. Modify when you need to. Child’s pose is always available, and taking it isn’t quitting. It’s listening.
If something hurts (sharp, pinchy or wrong), come out of it. Yoga should feel like effort sometimes, but never like pain.
What the end of class feels like
Most classes end with a few minutes of lying down in rest, called savasana. It can feel strange to lie still in a room full of people. Then you realize how much you needed it. Many people say this is the moment they get hooked.
