What is Thai yoga bodywork? The easiest way I can describe it is this: it’s like having yoga done to you. You lie on a soft mat, fully clothed, and your practitioner moves your body through stretches, presses along your muscles and rocks you gently, all in rhythm with your breath. You don’t have to do a thing.
It’s one of my favorite ways to give care, and it’s one of the offerings people are most curious about at our studio. Here’s what to know.
What is Thai yoga bodywork?
Thai yoga bodywork is an interactive form of bodywork that brings together assisted stretching, acupressure, mobility work, breath awareness and meditative movement. It’s yoga and bodywork as one experience.
Many people know it as “Thai massage.” Here’s the difference in how we describe it: Thai yoga bodywork is a traditional practice, not licensed massage therapy. It’s its own thing, with its own roots.
How is Thai yoga bodywork different from massage?
It’s related to massage, but distinct in a few important ways.
You stay fully clothed. There’s no undressing and no oil.
It happens on the floor. Instead of a massage table, you lie on a floor mat, which gives the practitioner room to move you.
It’s movement-based. Instead of oil-based gliding strokes, your practitioner uses assisted stretches, acupressure and rhythmic compression. They’ll lift a leg, rotate a hip, lean into your back, and guide you through shapes you might recognize from yoga.
It’s interactive. Your breath is part of it. Your practitioner may ask you to breathe in as they lift, and breathe out as they deepen a stretch.
Many people describe it as part stretching, part yoga, part meditation.
What does a Thai yoga bodywork session feel like?
Thai yoga bodywork can feel both deeply relaxing and surprisingly active. You may feel:
- Long, easy stretches in places that are hard to reach on your own, like the hips, hamstrings and shoulders.
- Firm, rhythmic pressure along the legs, back and arms.
- A gentle rocking that many people find soothing.
- Space. Especially through the spine and hips, as if you have a little more room to move.
- Calm. The steady rhythm and breath tend to quiet the mind.
Pressure and pacing are always adjusted to you. If anything is too much, say so. Sensitivity is honored, not pushed past, and consent is checked throughout the session. You can adjust at any time.
What happens during a session?
A consultation. We’ll start by talking about your goals, any injuries, health conditions or pregnancy, and the areas where you’d like support. Time is built into the first session for this conversation.
The session. You’ll lie on the mat, and I’ll work through the body with stretches, acupressure and rhythmic movement, tailored in real time to what your body is asking for.
Integration. Afterward, there’s time to sit, have some water or tea, and come back slowly. That quiet time is part of the work.
What to wear for Thai yoga bodywork
Wear loose, stretchy clothing you can move in, the same kind of thing you’d wear to a yoga class. Avoid jeans, belts or anything stiff or restrictive. Leave jewelry at home if you can.
Who is Thai yoga bodywork good for?
Thai yoga bodywork can be a lovely fit if you:
- Feel stiff or tight and have trouble stretching on your own
- Are active or athletic and want support with recovery and mobility
- Want the benefits of a stretch without doing the work
- Prefer to stay clothed during bodywork
- Love yoga and want to experience it in a totally new way
- Need a way to rest that still involves some movement
You don’t need any yoga experience. Many bodywork clients have never set foot on a yoga mat.
If you have an injury, a medical condition, or you’re pregnant, talk with your doctor first and let me know before the session. Thai yoga bodywork is a traditional wellness practice, not a medical treatment.
