When people tell me they’re thinking about their first retreat, they usually have a picture in mind. Maybe it’s a silent room, or a schedule packed from dawn to dark, or a group of very bendy people who all know each other. The real thing is usually much gentler than that. So let’s talk about what happens at a yoga retreat, and how to know if one is right for you.

What is a yoga retreat?

A yoga retreat is time set aside to step outside your daily life and practice in a new setting, usually with a small group. It might be a single day close to home, a weekend away or a full week somewhere far.

Retreats aren’t about escaping life. They’re about returning to it more fully. You rest, move, eat well and give your nervous system a real break.

What does a typical day look like?

Every retreat is different, but most days share a similar rhythm. Here’s an example from our retreats:

  • Morning: meditation and breathwork, then a yoga class. Morning sessions are often gentler so the day can build.
  • Breakfast: a nourishing meal together, with Ayurvedic options on select retreats.
  • Midday: an excursion, a walk, a workshop or free time.
  • Lunch: often shared, sometimes on your own.
  • Afternoon: unscheduled time to rest, read, swim or explore.
  • Evening: a slower practice like restorative yoga, then dinner and community time.

We purposely don’t overschedule. Built-in spaciousness is part of the experience.

What’s usually included in a yoga retreat?

Inclusions vary, so always check the specific retreat page. For most of our retreats, you can expect:

  • Shared accommodations
  • Daily yoga and meditation
  • All meals, with Ayurvedic options on select retreats
  • Excursions and group activities
  • Welcome and closing rituals

Things not typically included are airfare, transportation to the venue, travel insurance, optional spa treatments and alcohol.

Are yoga retreats good for beginners?

Yes. Most retreats welcome all levels, and modifications are always offered. Many people who come on their first retreat with us have only practiced for a few months. If a retreat is specifically advanced, which is rare, we’ll say so clearly.

If you’re nervous about keeping up, a few classes at the studio beforehand can help you feel at home with the practice.

Is it okay to go alone?

Absolutely. Most of our retreaters come solo. By the second day, groups usually feel like family. Single and shared room options are typically available, depending on the retreat. If you’re nervous about traveling alone, reach out. We’re always happy to talk it through.

What should you pack?

We send a detailed packing list four to six weeks before each retreat. The basics:

  • Comfortable yoga clothes
  • Layers, since mornings can be cool
  • A journal
  • A refillable water bottle
  • Your favorite tea or small comforts from home

Mats and props are provided at most retreat venues, so you usually don’t need to travel with your own.

What about food and dietary needs?

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and most allergy-conscious diets are easy to accommodate. We work with retreat chefs in advance. If you have a severe allergy, tell us when you book so we can confirm with the venue.

Day retreat or week away?

A day retreat is a wonderful first step. You get the feeling of a retreat without travel, time off work or a big budget. Our day retreat, Rooted, takes place at Orkestai Farm within Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, right here on Long Island. The day includes outdoor all-levels yoga, guided meditation, a seasonal farm lunch and a hands-on permaculture gardening workshop led by Orkestai Farm. You even plant and take home elements of your own garden. No gardening or yoga experience is needed. You can join the waitlist for the next Rooted date.

A longer retreat gives your nervous system more time to truly downshift. On our horizon are a Tuscany retreat in Italy in summer 2027, a winter tropical retreat in Aruba in February 2027 and a Women’s Weekend Retreat in upstate New York in winter 2027. Each has a waitlist on our retreats page.

Can you pay over time?

Most of our retreats offer a payment plan, with a deposit to reserve your spot and the balance broken into monthly payments before the trip. Specifics are on each retreat page or available by email.

Private retreats

We also design private retreats for individuals, families, small groups, brands and wellness gatherings, in the Hamptons, across Long Island, at vacation properties or destination settings. These can include yoga, meditation, Ayurvedic meals, wellness workshops, marma bodywork, breathwork and private cooking experiences.

How do you feel after a retreat?

Most people come home rested in a way a regular vacation doesn’t quite reach. Many also bring something back with them: a morning practice, a new friendship or a quieter way of moving through the day. That’s my favorite part.

Find your retreat

If you’re craving a reset, there’s probably a retreat that fits your life right now, whether it’s one day on a farm or a week by the sea. New retreats are announced quarterly, and the interest list gets early access.
