Is Online Yoga as Good as In-Studio Yoga? An Honest Comparison

Is online yoga as good as in-studio yoga? An honest look at the pros of each, when livestream or on demand works best, and how to get more from home practice.

I own a yoga studio, so you might expect me to say in-person is always better. But I’ve also watched thousands of people build real, lasting practices at home. So when someone asks me, is online yoga as good as in-studio yoga, my honest answer is: it depends on what you need, and most people do best with a bit of both.

Here’s how I’d think about it.

What in-studio yoga does best

Real-time feedback

A teacher in the room can see how you’re moving. They can offer a hands-on adjustment (with your consent), suggest a prop or notice that something isn’t quite right before it becomes a problem. That matters most when you’re new or working around an injury.

Energy and community

There’s something about practicing with other people. The shared breath, the quiet before class, the friendships that start in the lobby. Many people find it easier to stay motivated when others are expecting them.

A space set apart

At home, there’s laundry, a dog and a phone. In the studio, there’s nothing to do but practice. That separation helps a lot of people actually drop in.

Props and setup

Studios have bolsters, blankets, blocks and straps ready to go. This is especially helpful for restorative classes, where the props are the practice.

What online yoga does best

Convenience

No commute, no parking, no rushing. You can practice in your pajamas at 6 a.m. or at 10 p.m. after the kids are asleep.

Consistency

Because it’s easier to fit in, online practice can help you practice more often. And how often you practice matters more than where.

Choice

An on-demand library lets you pick exactly what you need today: a 15-minute core class, a long yin practice, a meditation or a gentle class for a tired day.

Privacy

Some people feel self-conscious in a room full of strangers. Practicing at home first can build confidence.

Practice anywhere

Traveling, snowed in, home with a sick kid or not feeling well? You don’t have to skip your practice.

Livestream vs on demand

There are two kinds of online yoga, and they feel different.

Livestream classes happen in real time. You’re practicing with a live teacher and a group, which brings back some of the energy and accountability of the studio. It’s a good choice when you want structure.

On demand classes are recorded, so you can practice whenever you like. It’s ideal for busy, unpredictable schedules, and for revisiting classes you love.

Is online yoga safe for beginners?

It can be, with a little care. If you’re brand new, I’d suggest a few in-studio classes or a private session first if you can, so a teacher can help you with the basics. Then online practice becomes much safer and more enjoyable.

If you’re starting online, choose beginner classes, move slowly, use props and skip anything that doesn’t feel right. Our on-demand library has a whole beginner section, including breath basics, a first-class walkthrough and workshops on how to modify poses and set up your space.

How to get the most from online yoga

  • Make a little space. Even a cleared corner with your mat makes a difference.
  • Gather props. Blocks, a strap, a firm pillow and a blanket go a long way.
  • Put your phone away or on do not disturb.
  • Schedule it. Treat it like a class you booked.
  • Follow a path. Guided series give you direction and help you stay consistent.
  • Check in with a teacher now and then, in person or in a private session.

The best of both

Most of our students mix them. They come to the studio a couple of times a week and practice online on the other days. Or they practice online most of the time and come in for workshops, restorative classes or a reset.

That’s why our memberships include both. Every membership includes unlimited in-studio classes plus unlimited livestream and on-demand access.

What’s in our on-demand library?

Revolution Yoga On Demand includes:

  • 1,700+ classes across all our signature styles: Newbies, Gentle Flow, Revolution Flow, Core, Restorative, Hatha and Yin and Maha Flow
  • Guided paths like a 7-day beginner reset, a 14-day introduction, a 21-day nervous system reset and a 10-day home practice builder
  • Seasonal practices based on Ayurveda
  • Free philosophy and meditation through our Sadhana library, no membership needed

You can watch a free five-minute preview of sample classes right in your browser before you join. You can also see our livestream schedule on our Practice Anywhere page.

So, is online yoga as good?

For consistency, convenience and choice, online yoga can be wonderful. For feedback, community and deep rest with props, the studio is hard to beat. The best practice is the one you’ll actually do, and for most people that means a mix.

If you’re in Rockville Centre or anywhere nearby on Long Island, you can have both. If you’re far away, our online classes mean you can still practice with us.

The easiest way to try it all is our New Student Special: three weeks of unlimited in-studio, livestream and on-demand classes for $49.99. Membership details are on our pricing page.
