Find Your Focus This Fall: Drishti for a Windy Season

Fall's winds stir up racing thoughts, dryness and overwhelm. Ayurveda explains why, and how a single point of focus, drishti, steadies mind and practice.

A focused, steady yoga practice

The rains and winds pick up as we transition into the colder months, and you’ll find the same thing starting to happen in your body. Ayurveda, yoga’s sister science, teaches that what happens above, in nature, happens below, in our own bodies.

You may feel the mobility of the wind as mobility in your mind: racing thoughts, more anxiety, maybe over-planning and overwhelming ourselves with things to do, and becoming exhausted more easily. The skin and lips start to dry out, just like the leaves on the trees, and aches and pains can come with the dryness.

The beautiful thing about our practice is that we can balance ourselves to the point where we enjoy nature’s changes rather than suffer from them. Every class at Revolution is sequenced to help balance you for the season we are in.

The theme for fall: focus

How can we focus our attention like a laser beam on our intention? On the mat, choosing a drishti, a point of focus, can change the way the brain works. When we focus on too many things at once, we waste a lot of energy. Focusing on one thing at a time builds mastery.

Try one of these through your whole practice:

  • Your breath. Stay with it from the first pose to the last, and you’ll stay energized longer.
  • The pit of the belly. Keep feeling this center through every movement.
  • A single spot. Choose one point on the wall or floor to gaze at. It helps tremendously.

Pick one and stick with it for the next month in class. As you train your brain to focus on something simple, it becomes a great stabilizer in your life, helping you positively change the way you do things every day.
