Students ask me all the time whether they should see a chiropractor or just keep doing yoga. My answer is usually: why not both? Chiropractic care and yoga come at the body from different directions, and they often support each other beautifully.
Here’s how they fit together, and what to know before you book.
What is chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care focuses on the alignment of the spine and joints, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal and function well. When the body is better aligned, movement often becomes easier, tension decreases and the nervous system can work more efficiently.
A chiropractor uses hands-on adjustments and other techniques to address pain, stiffness and movement patterns. A good chiropractor also teaches you how to take care of your body between visits.
How chiropractic care and yoga complement each other
Think of it this way. Yoga builds strength, flexibility and awareness. Chiropractic care helps make sure your structure is aligned and supported, so you can move more freely and safely.
A few ways they work together:
Yoga helps adjustments last. Building strength and stability around a joint can help you hold onto the improvements from a chiropractic visit.
Chiropractic care can make yoga feel better. When a restricted area moves more freely, poses that felt stuck may start to open up.
Both build body awareness. Yoga teaches you to notice how you move. Many chiropractors use proprioceptive training and biofeedback to do the same thing from another angle.
Both look at the long term. Neither is just about a quick fix. They’re about how your body moves and feels over years.
What happens at a chiropractic appointment?
At our studio, chiropractic care is offered by Dr. Keith Angrisani, a licensed chiropractor (DC). His approach combines precise adjustments with an understanding of movement, posture and long-term structural health.
Your first visit includes a complete patient history, a thorough physical exam and your first treatment. From there, ongoing sessions use the techniques most appropriate for your body. These may include:
- Manual therapy and spinal manipulation
- Active and passive stretching, including PIR and PNF techniques
- Cupping and therapeutic taping
- Myofascial flossing and rolling
- Rehabilitative exercise
- Proprioceptive training and biofeedback
The goal is both immediate relief and lasting improvement in how your body moves.
When should you see a chiropractor?
People come to chiropractic care for many reasons, including:
- Back and neck pain
- Joint stiffness and discomfort
- Postural imbalances
- Headaches and tension
- Limited mobility
- Sports-related strain
- Everyday wear and tear
- Performance and recovery
It’s also a good idea if a certain area keeps limiting your yoga practice. If one shoulder never wants to go overhead, or your low back always complains in the same pose, it’s worth getting it looked at.
If you have severe or sudden pain, numbness, tingling, weakness or an injury, please see your doctor first.
What does an adjustment feel like?
People are often curious, and sometimes a little nervous, about their first adjustment. Many describe it as a quick, gentle pressure followed by a feeling of release. Sometimes there’s a small popping sound, which is a normal release of gas from the joint and nothing to worry about.
Not every session is about adjustments, either. Depending on what you need, your visit may focus more on stretching, soft tissue work, taping or rehabilitative exercise. If anything feels uncomfortable, say so. A good chiropractor will always explain what they’re doing and check in with you as they go.
Yoga tips for between visits
Here are a few gentle guidelines I share with students who are working with a chiropractor:
- Tell your teacher. Let them know what you’re working on so they can offer options.
- Ask your chiropractor if there are movements to avoid or emphasize for now.
- Choose steady over intense. Slow, mindful classes are often a better fit while your body adjusts. Our Revolution Gentle Flow and Hatha and Yin classes are good options.
- Focus on stability, not just flexibility. Strength around the joints matters as much as range of motion.
- Notice patterns. Pay attention to how you sit, stand and carry things during the day. Yoga awareness doesn’t stop when you roll up your mat.
If you’d like one-on-one guidance, a private yoga session lets a teacher build a practice around exactly what your body needs.
Is chiropractic care good for yoga students?
Many yoga students find it helpful, especially those looking to improve alignment in their practice. Athletes use it for performance and recovery. And plenty of people simply want to move with more ease and less restriction. Every body is different, so talk with your chiropractor about your goals.
