How Do Kids Benefit From a Children's Yoga Class?

How do kids benefit from a children's yoga class? Focus, body awareness, calm, confidence and friendship, plus what a class for ages 5 to 10 looks like.

Parents often ask me how kids benefit from a children’s yoga class, especially when their child already has soccer, dance, swim and a full school day. It’s a good question. Kids yoga isn’t a watered-down grown-up class. It’s its own thing, and I think it gives children something that’s hard to find anywhere else: a place to move, breathe and just be themselves without anyone keeping score.

Here’s what I’ve seen it do.

Better focus and attention

Yoga asks kids to pay attention in a way that feels like play. Can you balance like a tree while the wind blows? Can you hold still like a mountain for five breaths? Can you listen for the very last sound of the chime?

These little challenges build focus without a lecture. Children practice noticing, holding their attention on one thing, and coming back when their mind wanders. Mindfulness and focus are at the heart of what we teach in our kids classes, and it’s lovely to watch a wiggly group settle into a moment of quiet together.

Body awareness and coordination

Kids are growing fast, and their bodies change almost monthly. Yoga gives them a chance to explore how they move. Balancing on one foot, crawling like a bear, stretching tall and curling small all build coordination and balance.

There’s also something deeper happening. Children start to notice what’s going on inside. Is my heart beating fast after we jumped? Do my shoulders feel tight? Am I tired or hungry or wound up? That kind of body awareness is a skill they’ll use for the rest of their lives.

Calm and emotional regulation

This is the one parents tell me about most. Kids learn simple breathing tools in class, like big belly breaths or slow “smell the flower, blow out the candle” breathing. Then one day, in the car or at bedtime or in the middle of a meltdown, they use it on their own.

We think of our kids classes as support for emotional regulation and the nervous system. Children learn that big feelings are allowed, and that they have tools to help those feelings move through. It won’t make every hard moment disappear (nothing does), but it gives them somewhere to start.

Confidence building

In a good kids yoga class, there is no winning and no losing. A child who falls out of a balance is just as welcome as the one who holds it. That takes the pressure off, and confidence tends to grow in that kind of space.

Kids also get to try things that feel a little bold. Leading the group in a pose. Making up a new animal shape. Trying a brand new balance. Every one of those small moments tells a child, “I can do hard things.”

Social connection and kindness

Kids yoga is a group activity, and a surprisingly social one. Children work with partners, play cooperative games and share ideas. They learn to take turns, to be gentle with each other and to cheer each other on. For kids who don’t love competitive sports, it can be a warm place to connect with other children.

Creativity and imagination

Children don’t need poses explained with anatomy. They need a story. In our classes, poses become animals, trees, rockets and waves, and a whole class might travel to the jungle or outer space. Creativity and imagination are a real part of the practice, and they make it fun enough that kids want to come back.

What a kids yoga class looks like

Our kids yoga classes are for ages 5 to 10. They’re creative and engaging, and they use a mix of yoga, storytelling, breathwork, movement, games and music. Every teacher brings their own style, but you can generally expect:

  • A playful welcome and a check-in, so everyone arrives.
  • A warm-up with movement and breath.
  • Poses woven into a story, game or theme.
  • Partner or group activities.
  • A calm, quiet rest at the end, which many kids end up loving the most.

Kids don’t need any experience, special clothes or flexibility. Comfortable clothes they can move in are perfect, and we practice barefoot.

Classes for every age in the family

Kids yoga for ages 5 to 10 is one part of what we offer for families at our Rockville Centre studio. We also have Mommy and Me Yoga for ages 2 to 5 with a parent or caregiver, Tweens and Teens Yoga for ages 11 to 17, and Family Yoga where all ages share the mat. Children 10 and older who are mature enough may also join Gentle Flow and Revolution Flow classes with a parent’s permission and a parent practicing alongside them.

If your family would rather practice privately, we offer private and semi-private family sessions in the studio, at home, virtually or outdoors. You can find those on our private yoga page.

And if you have a birthday coming up, our yoga parties are a fun way for kids to try yoga with their friends.

Is kids yoga right for your child?

If your child has a lot of energy, yoga gives it somewhere to go. If your child is anxious or shy, yoga offers a gentle, no-pressure space. If your child is always on the move from one activity to the next, yoga might be the one hour a week where they get to slow down. I’ve seen every kind of kid find something in it.

You can see current class times on our schedule, and read more about all of our family offerings on our kids and family yoga page. Come try a class with us in Rockville Centre. We’d love to meet your little yogi.
